“Yes, the truth is, I had to fight for happiness, I have it in my own hands, suddenly I was someone and everyone wanted more,” sings Michelle in what is probably her last single. And tells her fans the story of how she moved from the women’s shelter to the hotel room, how she saw the world in her career but dreamed of family and a home. Michelle was in the spotlight for 30 years, and that should now be over.
She sings about trusting the “wrong people”, “those who can’t get their shit together”, a statement that she underlines in an interview with the “Bild Zeitung”. Apparently there were “always people who abused my trust in the most massive way. Who only took advantage of me to enrich themselves.” She says that after 30 years in her career, this is “no longer acceptable” for her.
She was “directed with the wrong words. I can’t do it anymore,” she sings in her farewell song. This refers to the people she mentions again in the interview: “I swam through a shark tank for thirty years, mostly without a lifebuoy. Now I’ve reached a point where I don’t have the strength to continue. I don’t want to be in this toxic environment any longer remain. Neither as the artist Michelle nor as Tanja.”
Tanja Hewer is the real name of the pop star. On Saturday evening, the 51-year-old will perform her song “That was it for me”, which she wrote herself, on Florian Silbereisen’s ARD show “Schlagerboom”. But the singer doesn’t leave her fans out in the cold and also says: “I’m going to give my fans another album as a farewell next year. My life’s work. Every song on it is absolutely personal. And I want a farewell tour.”
She would like to keep her foot in the music world in the future, but on the other side. She wants other artists to be able to learn from her experiences. “Not as a manager, but as a kind of coach and supporter, so that they don’t make the same mistakes as me,” says Michelle, who had trouble with her manager Markus Krampe just last summer. He accused her of only having eyes for her boyfriend Eric Philippi, who was 25 years her junior, and, as the singer says, ended his collaboration with her out of the blue.
After the turbulent summer, Michelle told “Bild”: “I wrote everything down. My broken childhood. My eternal search for love. The successes, disappointments and defeats. Of course you always have to look at your own nose. But many of mine Mistakes happened because I didn’t know. I always thought I could trust my managers. Unfortunately, looking back, that was wrong.”
Now the singer is drawing conclusions from her thoughts and is leaving the music industry.
