Actress and plan ambassador Senta Berger (81, “Under Suspicion”) wants more equality for girls and young women all over the world. “We need education, we need information and we need equality to be a matter of course,” said Berger in a video message on World Day of the Girl on October 11.
The actress, who has been an ambassador for the children’s rights organization Plan International for many years, helped initiate World Day of the Girl. This year marks the tenth anniversary of International Day of the Girl.
In 2003, Senta Berger traveled to Nepal with Plan International and met Sharmila, a little girl who was walking barefoot in the freezing cold and in torn clothes, while her brother wore shoes and a uniform and was allowed to attend school. When Senta Berger asked the reason for this unequal treatment, the siblings’ mother said, “Because she’s a girl.” The actress was so upset that she began campaigning for girls’ rights with Plan.
