With the supernatural horror series “Mayfair Witches”, the second serial adaptation of a book series by cult author Anne Rice (1941-2021) started on the US channel AMC at the beginning of this year. The gothic horror series consequently plays in a shared universe with “Interview with the Vampire” – and for the future AMC has not ruled out crossover episodes between the two shows.
On March 31 of this year, “Mayfair Witches” will start with “The White Lotus” star Alexandra Daddario (37) in the leading role in Germany on Sky and its streaming service Wow.
dr Rowan Fielding (Daddario) is a brilliant neurosurgeon who lives in seclusion on a houseboat in San Francisco. When her adoptive mother is diagnosed with cancer, Rowan discovers that she has a terrifying gift: she can kill other people with just the power of her mind. The young woman discovers that she is in fact descended from a long line of witches who have been plagued by a seductive and menacing supernatural being for centuries. Rowan heads to New Orleans to meet her birth mother, Deirdre (Annabeth Gish, 52).
After the action begins in San Francisco, the series “Mayfair Witches” quickly moves to the legendary southern metropolis of New Orleans. Here viewers experience lavish feasts in sprawling, crumbling mansions and extravagant nightly funeral processions as the character Rowan gradually discovers her powers. Ultimately, it is not only the main character of “Mayfair Witches” who succumbs to the beauty and seductive power of the city at the mouth of the Mississippi.
In addition to “The White Lotus” star Daddario, a whole series of high-profile actors and actresses appear in front of the camera in “Mayfair Witches”. Annabeth Gish, known from the series “Halt and Catch Fire” and “Sons of Anarchy”, plays Rowan’s biological mother Deirdre, who has been haunted by the inscrutable shapeshifter Lasher since she was young. Actor Jack Huston (“House of Gucci”, 40) embodies the malicious being who quickly sets out to cast a spell over Deirdre’s daughter Rowan.
Rowan’s controlling and strictly religious aunt Carlotta Mayfair, on the other hand, is played by the grandiose character actress Beth Grant (73), who has already appeared in an incredible 240 film and series productions in her long and illustrious career. “Mad Men” veteran Harry Hamlin (71) embodies the dandy-like head of the family clan with Cortland Mayfair.
After her adoptive mother Elena Fielding, played by Erica Gimpel (“Veronica Mars”, 58), died of cancer, the main character Rowan receives help from the agent Ciprien Grieve, who takes care of her and tries to explain her magical powers to the young woman. Tongayi Chirisa (“iZombie”, 41) embodies the character that was put together for the series from two characters appearing in Anne Rice’s original novels.
Behind the series “Mayfair Witches” are the co-showrunners and series creators Michelle Ashford (“Masters of Sex”, 62) and Esta Spalding (56). The US channel AMC has already ordered a second season of the new show. So “Mayfair Witches” will continue.
