Reese Witherspoon was fed up with Hollywood as it was. Too much mockery, too little perspective. It would have been easy for her to give up acting and retire – but Witherspoon wanted more. She wanted the change, so she made it happen. Today she not only shows everyone what modern film can look like, she is also probably the most powerful woman in Hollywood.
At 35, Reese Witherspoon was flipping through a movie’s script and getting annoyed. “There were [roles for] two women and both were pathetic, disgusting, awful,” Witherspoon said, according to The Telegraph. She declined, but that didn’t solve the problem, it was a system. Interesting female roles were scarce at the time. What do you do when you’ve already won an Oscar, but are only offered roles in which women are mere accessories? Man, better: Reese Witherspoon creates the roles herself – she founded a production company.
“I started this company to change the way women are seen in the media,” Forbes quoted Witherspoon as saying. The number of viewers showed that there was a gap in Hollywood that needed to be filled that had been ignored for a long time. The first two films Witherspoon produced, Wild and Gone Girl, were box office hits. The work of the films’ two leading actresses, one of which was Witherspoon himself, was recognized with Oscar nominations.
In the meantime, the production company has become the digital media company “Hello Sunshine”, which produces hits non-stop, including “Big Little Lies” and currently “Daisy Jones
The fact that things are going so well is not only due to Witherspoon’s hand in selecting the fabrics. The 47-year-old has also been running a book club for a number of years, where she gives recommendations, among other things. Quite a few of them end up on the bestseller list thanks to their 2.7 million followers. A good lever if you plan to produce the book.
Witherspoon paid off. Through the films she produced herself, she got the roles she wanted to play – anyone who wants to shoot with her has to pay dearly for it. According to Forbes, she can now demand at least one million dollars per series episode alone, and a lot more for film roles, making her the currently richest actress in the world with 400 million dollars in her account.
