At least since her furious performance in the Netflix hit “The Queen’s Gambit”, model and actress Anya Taylor-Joy has become an integral part of Hollywood. Anyone who has seen the 27-year-old will not soon forget her. This is also due to their big eyes, which make them unmistakable and have attracted a lot of attention in the past – but not the good kind. She got bullied. It went so far that she could no longer look at herself in the mirror.

It was a post on Facebook that started it all. Someone had posted a picture of a fish and tagged Anya Taylor-Joy, then just a kid, with the words “You are because your eyes look like it.” Previously, she was not aware of her own special facial features, but after that she had not been able to look at herself in the mirror for a long time. Because she found the nasty comparison anything but funny.

“I still don’t spend a lot of time in front of mirrors because I don’t really have to deal with my face. Unfortunately, you all have to,” the then 20-year-old replied in an interview with W Magazine after also appearing there her “wide-set” eyes had been addressed and asked if they had unsettled her as a child. She’s still growing, but feels less awkward now, she said.

The actress revealed on the “Drew Barrymore Show” at the end of last year that she got through the bullying at school mainly with the help of her parents. Whenever schoolmates made fun of her looks, her mother reminded her that it’s about a person’s inner values: “You look at the inside of someone, you don’t look at their status, that’s not what it’s about . You don’t look at what their job is, it’s all about if you like that person’s heart.”

Just a few days ago, Anya Taylor-Joy’s testimonies about the bullying she endured as a child and what it did to her made rounds of the internet again. Once again, they sparked a discussion about the damage such comments can do to the bodies of others. Singer Ariana Grande had previously commented on her experiences in this regard.
