August 11, 1973 is considered the birthday of hip-hop culture. At a party in the basement of 1520 Sedgewick Avenue, a certain Kool Herc put on records for the first time using the breakbeat technique he invented – the hip-hop beat was invented. However, it wasn’t Herc himself, but his sister Cindy Campbell who threw the infamous “back to school” party in the first place. She designed flyers and invitation cards, asked her brother to take care of the music and dressed him up to look like the star he was yet to become.
