It was supposed to be a big coup: comedy star Dave Chappelle brought a very special star guest onto the stage for his performance in San Francisco. None other than tech billionaire and newly minted Twitter boss Elon Musk. Musk has many fans around the world who admire his meteoric career and creative business ideas. With questionable expressions of opinion and business practices, the 51-year-old has made himself increasingly unpopular in recent weeks.
Just how much, that’s what he and Dave Chappelle heard when Musk took the stage at the Chase Center in San Francisco. Although there was applause, parts of the audience began to boo him loudly and for a long time. Ironically, Chappelle had announced the entrepreneur with the call: “Make some noise for the richest man in the world” – and that’s exactly what viewers did. Albeit in a different way than the comedian probably expected.
The unfriendly reception seemed to overwhelm Elon Musk. He stood next to Chappelle on stage, relatively at a loss and didn’t seem quite sure what to do or say. For his part, the comedian wasn’t at a loss for a cheeky joke: “Sounds like some of the people you fired are in the audience today,” he told Musk. Chappelle replied: “You didn’t expect that, did you?”
Chappelle has not been without controversy himself since he spoke out against the recognition of trans people in a comedy special on Netflix. Elon Musk’s daughter, 18-year-old Vivian, broke off contact with her father a few months ago after coming out as trans and, according to her, not receiving any support from him.
A bystander filmed the awkward scene at Chappelle’s show and shared it on Twitter. His account there disappeared soon after. Due to the wrath of Elon Musk, or for other reasons? One does not know. In any case, too late: the clip has long spread elsewhere on the Internet and has been uploaded to YouTube several times. And Elon Musk has to face the fact that he doesn’t just have fans.
