October 10 has been World Mental Health Day for 30 years. To mark the urgency of mental health, Prince William, 40, and Princess Kate, 40, have dabbled in a challenging profession – the couple hosting a radio show on Britain’s BBC Radio 1. The special episode is an issue of “Newsbeat”, a program aimed at young adults.
The Prince and Princess of Wales’ official Twitter account posted a clip of the episode, which was taped last Monday and will be aired on Tuesday (11 October). In the clip, Prince William draws a comparison between mental health and a toolbox: “A lot of people don’t know exactly what they need until they need it. You can live your life in a minute and suddenly something huge changes. Then it will you realize that you don’t necessarily have the right tools or experience to do it.”
In the excerpt, Princess Kate proves her qualities as an interviewer and at the same time as an empathetic listener. There is simply no “right and wrong” in this important matter, Kate replies to her interview partner. “Different things work for different people.”
Prince William and Princess Kate have been committed to educating people about mental health and helping people with depression for years. In 2016, for example, they launched the Heads Together initiative to eliminate stigma surrounding the issue and encourage those affected to seek help.
But the two have also been working as a royal radio duo. About five years ago, they also ran a chart show together on BBC Radio 1.
