The news of the death of Alan Arkins (1934-2023) shook the film world. The longtime actor and Oscar winner has passed away at the age of 89, his sons Adam, Matthew and Anthony have confirmed to the US magazine “People”. Hollywood star Anne Hathaway (40) remembers a colleague who meant a lot to the actress’ career.

“Alan Arkin was a gem of a person and I am so fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him on ‘Get Smart,'” Hathaway wrote on Instagram along with several pictures of the deceased, some of which include her by his side is. In the action comedy released in 2008 by director Peter Segal (61), the two played alongside Steve Carell (60), Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (51) and Bill Murray (72).

“He was kind, soulful, supportive, a professional from a professional, generous, authentic, wise, curious and a fantastic example of an artist,” Hathaway continues. On the set, he left a lasting impression on the then 23-year-old actress. Arkin is at the center of some of the moments in her career that she cherishes the most and remembers fondly.

For Carell, Arkin was “my idol, my friend and I loved him,” he tells People, recalling the first time they met. “When I first met Alan, he gave me a business card,” explains Carell. It said: “Alan Arkin: Actor, director, musician. Can drive cars with gears. Owns his own tuxedo.”

Many other colleagues also condoled or remembered Arkin in the past few hours. Michael Douglas (78) writes on Instagram: “Today we have lost a wonderful actor whose intelligence, flair for comedy and consummate professionalism have left an indelible mark on our industry over the past 70 years.”
