Vilma Fuentes was in deep mourning – her son, Osman Adonay Urbina, had been murdered when he was just 14 years old. At least that’s what the woman from Honduras believed.

Police had identified a murder victim in the town of La Entrada as her son. The entire family mourned the teenager who died far too early and gathered at a closed coffin for a wake. But then the actually impossible happened: a call lit up on the mother’s cell phone – from her son, who was believed to be dead. “I’m alive, I’m not dead,” Osman said, the woman told the newspaper El Heraldo. There was no mistake: it was a video call, the mother and the entire family could see the alleged dead person they were mourning on the other end of the line.

But how could the error come about? The murder victim had been shot in the head and neck and the body was severely disfigured, making identification difficult. However, some scars on the body led the family to identify the dead man as Osman. The police then released the body for burial.

In reality, the man who was supposedly killed was on the border with Mexico, as he explained to the completely surprised mourners. Three weeks earlier he had set off for the United States.

The family was very happy to discover that Osman was still alive – the funeral went ahead anyway. Out of respect for the unknown dead man, as his mother explained: “He is human.” The police have now discovered the true identity of the body. It is a 15-year-old boy who looked very similar to Osman Adonay Urbina and also had similar scars.
