Lots of praise from Germany’s leading Barbie expert: Düsseldorf native Bettina Dorfmann (62), record Barbie collector and book author, has praised the recently released movie “Barbie”: “I’ve seen it twice and think it’s very good,” said Dorfmann in Düsseldorf to the German Press Agency.
Above all, she liked the message of the film – a plea for equal rights for women. The film also won her over with its mix of fun and thoughtful elements.
The film plays with gender roles, said Dorfmann: In the “Barbie world” the women set the tone and the men, the Kens, are just decorative accessories. “Ken can’t do anything and just lies on the beach,” reports Dorfmann. “He’s nothing without Barbie.” In the end, it was Ken who was helped to participate more in the “Barbie World”.
Before that, however, he fails in his attempt to overthrow the matriarchy and establish old-style male rule.
With 18,500 Barbie dolls, Bettina Dorfmann holds the world record as a collector, certified by the Guinness Book of Records. She dedicated her life to the toy figure from US manufacturer Mattel, which first appeared in 1959.
Dorfmann is a Collectibles Appraiser, Barbie Show Curator, and Barbie Repairer. She works at the toy museum in Ratingen. The movie “Barbie” by director Greta Gerwig (39) was released in Germany last week. Gerwig is known for her feminist perspective.
