With prominent support, the “Queen of Metal” Doro Pesch wants to rock the heavy metal festival in Wacken on Wednesday. “I would say Wacken is still the biggest metal festival in the world,” Pesch told the German Press Agency.
Among others, singer Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), drummer Mikkey Dee (formerly Motörhead, today Scorpions), singer Udo Dirkschneider, singer Joey Belladonna (Anthrax) and guitarist Uli Jon Roth want to support the 59-year-old Pesch in the north.
“The metal heart beats faster”
The singer from Düsseldorf has been on stage for 40 years. In the 1980s, with her band Warlock and later as a solo musician, she became well known beyond the metal scene. At the well-known festival in Schleswig-Holstein, she was there with the band nine or ten times as a headliner and about twenty times in total, “probably even more often,” said Pesch.
“I was in Wacken for the first time in 1993, when it was still manageable and already done really well,” said Pesch. “You could tell there was so much heart and passion.” The potential to become something very important and big could already be felt back then. “And the people who were there also noticed that it’s different. That’s something for metal hearts.” The festival is unique. “The metal heart beats faster and I love it from the first hour.”
Referring to the festival co-founders Thomas Jensen and Holger Hübner, Pesch spoke of a deep friendship. “They both always helped me with everything, including my anniversaries that we organized in Düsseldorf.” You have the feeling: “They do everything for me and I do everything for them. That’s very clear, you don’t need to talk about it.”
The festival (2nd to 5th August) is again sold out with 85,000 visitors. A total of more than 200 concerts are planned there on nine stages. Among others, the British band Iron Maiden is expected.
