New role for “Game of Thrones” star Emilia Clarke (36). As “Variety” reports, the 36-year-old plays the wife of writer Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) in “An Ideal Wife”. The title is a reference to “An Ideal Husband,” a famous comedy directed by Oscar Wilde.
The film sheds light on the life of Wilde’s wife, Constance Lloyd, who is also a prominent author herself. In addition to writing articles in The Woman’s World magazine, edited by Oscar Wilde, she has written several children’s books.
Constance Lloyd and Oscar Wilde married in 1884, having only met in the same year. The couple had two sons, Cyril (born 1885) and Vyvyan (1886). Constance stood by her husband, even though he was open about his homosexual tendencies.
In 1895, Oscar Wilde was arrested for indecency and sentenced to two years in prison and hard labor. Constance Wilde left Great Britain and went into exile, including to Nuremberg. But she never divorced. In 1898 she died in Genoa for unknown reasons.
Details on what the film with Emilia Clarke could focus on are not yet available. “An Ideal Wife” is directed by Sophie Hyde (45), who recently shot “My Hours with Leo” with Emma Thompson (63) as a callboy customer.
