At the age of 32, Ed Sheeran has already broken almost all records. In 2022, he was the first artist worldwide to break the 100 million follower mark on Spotify, and his song “Shape of You” achieved an incredible three billion views on the audio streaming service.
He now secured another record at his two shows on June 10 and 11, 2023 at Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. As the magazine “People” reports, he broke the previous attendance record for the venue, which had been held by the Irish band U2 since 2011.
According to the organizers, Ed Sheeran managed to bring together a total of 173,390 fans in the two consecutive appearances and thus bring in a box office result of 18 million dollars. One of the shows drew an audience of 89,106, beating U2’s previous record of 88,491 fans per performance.
Before these record numbers were officially confirmed, the British pop star expressed his joy at the new record success in an emotional Instagram post shortly after the performance. Alongside a stunning aerial view of the packed stadium, he wrote: “Today I played my biggest show in the US and broke the Metlife ticketing record. I really don’t take it for granted.”
Given the crowds at his concerts, he humbly remembered the humble beginnings of his career. At his first concert in New York’s “Mercury Lounge” in 2012, he only played in front of around 130 people. Against this background, his current success feels “like a dream”.
