Former US President Donald Trump (76) flew back to Mar-a-Lago, Florida, after his court hearing in New York City. There he responded to the press charges of falsifying business records in 34 counts. He dismissed this as politically motivated and spoke of a “massive influence on the elections on a scale that our country has never seen before”.
He also renewed his innocence during the performance. “The only crime I have committed is the fearless defense of our nation against those who seek to destroy it,” he said in his nearly half-hour speech.
He then explained to the crowd that even people “who aren’t big fans” of his said that this “shouldn’t be happening”. “This fake case was only brought up to disrupt the upcoming 2024 election and it should be dropped immediately,” Trump said, according to various outlets including Sky News.
Referring to his charges, he said: “This is a prosecution, not an investigation,” but “we keep our heads high.” He also added: “Every single expert and legal expert said there was no case. Virtually everyone.”
As various US media, including the “New York Times”, reported, the 45th President of the United States is accused of having falsified business documents in 34 cases. After the New York Attorney’s Office read out the indictment, Trump pleaded “not guilty” on Tuesday.
Donald Trump, who was US President from 2017 to 2021, is running again to be his Republican party’s presidential candidate in the next US election in 2024.
