Wout van Aert has seen for the first time his crash during this year’s Tour de France in July, which left him with such extensive damage, he has not been able to compete since.
Now he speaks out about the minutes, while he lay on the asphalt.
Wout van Aert is running into on the last kilometers of the time trial during the Tour de France.
He is one of advance your favorites and is about to live up to the expectations by setting the best time.
But in a right turn movements he is too much and runs too close to the fence on the roadside and run into it.
The next moment he lies on the ground.
“It felt like I lay there forever,” says van Aert in an interview with Eric Goens of the Dutch documentary ‘Het Huis’. An interview that was made about a month after the crash.
the Adrenaline pumps around your body, and van Aert brands in the first place not to the large and deep wounds, he has suffered at the hip, and also have made a hole in a muscle.
As he lies on the ground, it is something completely different, which fills the mind with van Aert:
“I did not notice much to the wound, but I lay on the hot asphalt, and it was as if I burned alive. I can still clearly remember the feeling. It felt as if it lasted forever. As I remember it, it took a long time for the doctors to arrive,” says van Aert.
On live tv you could see people trying to help van Aaert before the doctors arrived and could treat him. The damage was very severe, and van Aert had himself never seen anything like this before:
“There are images that are made with a dashcam from holdbilen. There you can see the piece of muscle that has disappeared. You can also see it clearly from my injuries. The hole in my muscle was really like a knife that went through. I had never seen before.”
eventually it was however possible to carry van Aert to the hospital in Pau, where he underwent a long operation for the damage. He was then transferred to a hospital near his home in Herentals’, where he underwent yet another surgery and spent the first part of the process of getting on his feet again.
In the last week, Wout van Aert, he was about ready to run her first race since the crash:
“If the recovery continues as it is now, will I get a comeback in Loenhout the 27. december. My rehabilitation has been much faster than expected in the last month, and I can now train and increase the load,” said Van Aert.
the Belgian made his debut at the Tour de France in July as part of the Jumbo-Visma-team. Before he had to retire at the challenger, he had won the team time trial with Jumbo-Visma and sprintet to a victory on the 10. stage.
