In Spain, actress Ana Obregón is one of the country’s best-known stars. But she is currently not dominating the headlines with a new film, but with her baby. All of Spain is discussing the case – not surprising given the extremely unusual family constellation: a surrogate mother gave birth to the child, legally Obregón is the mother. And at the same time – from a biological point of view – also the girl’s grandmother.
Her biological father is her son Aless Lequio, who died in 2020 after cancer. He was only 27 years old. Obregón announced the news of her new motherhood on the cover of the Spanish magazine “Hóla”. She posed with the baby for the magazine. The actress posted two pictures on Instagram: one with the newborn and one of her as a young woman holding her little son.
“Who would have thought that 30 years later I would give your daughter the bottle,” she wrote. “I wish you were still here with us.” Aless Lequio had sperm frozen before his death. A surrogate mother in the United States then carried the child to term. Becoming a father was her son’s “last will,” Obregón said “Hóla” in an interview. He informed her and his father about this a week before his death. Lequio wanted to leave descendants in this world, according to Obregón. Her son actually wanted to have five children.
In Spain, the case has triggered a major debate that extends into politics. Surrogacy is illegal in the country. Equal Opportunities Minister Irene Montero describes it as “violence against women”. Elsewhere, however, the political front against surrogacy is crumbling, and the conservative popular party Partido Popular is considering releasing it on an unpaid basis. It is foreseeable that the Obregón case will not only dominate the gossip columns for some time to come.
Since sperm donation is allowed, everything was legal. Obregón is considered equal to biological parents by law. Apart from the legal requirements, many voices also see ethical problems: Many critics accuse Obregón of becoming a mother again at the age of 68, which is selfish. The child will soon no longer have a mother.
