A well-known world star once again greets from the top: Taylor Swift (33), with eight nominations, is the sole leader at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, which will be held on September 12 (in this country on the night of September 13) at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Swift is represented in all major categories, 21 in total this year. She herself has been nominated for “Artist of the Year”, her hit “Anti-Hero” will be launched in seven other categories, including “Best Song”, “Best Video”, “Best Director” and “Best Pop”.

Well-known names also dominate the other favourites. US singer SZA (33) can look forward to six nominations, Doja Cat (27), Miley Cyrus (30), Nicki Minaj (40), Olivia Rodrigo (20) and Sam Smith (31) can hope in five categories each . Shakira (46), Diddy (53) and the girl group Blackpink each received four nominations.

Other world stars, meanwhile, are entering the race with surprisingly few chances of an award. About Ed Sheeran (32), Dua Lipa (27), Drake (36) and Harry Styles (29): “Only” two nominations were made for them.

According to the press release, more first-nominated stars can look forward to one or more nominations than at any other VMA award ceremony before. Bonn-born German newcomer Kim Petras (30) is leading the field here – she was able to reap a proud five nominations, all for her joint hit with Sam Smith, “Unholy”. It’s up for grabs for Video of the Year and Song of the Year, as well as for direction, visual effects and choreography.

Fans can now vote for their favorite on the event’s homepage. It has not yet been announced who will be hosting the 40th anniversary edition of the MTV Video Music Awards.
