Matthew McConaughey, an actor and Uvalde native, took to social media Wednesday in response to the shooting.
He made a long statement in which he offered prayers for those affected and asked Americans to reconsider their values. Without specifically mentioning guns, or reforms, he said that “we have tragically proved that we are failingto be responsible for our rights our freedoms allow us”.
He wrote, “This epidemic is manageable, and regardless of which side we stand on, all parties know that we can do better.” “Action must take place so that no parent can experience what Uvalde’s parents and others have experienced.”
McConaughey, who has been openly considering running for Texas governor in recent times, did not specify which political party he would join. In November, McConaughey announced that he would consider other types of service.
McConaughey stated that McConaughey was a “simple kid” who was born in Uvalde, Texas. It’s an inspiring and humbling path to consider. It’s also a path I am choosing to not take at the moment.
He posted Wednesday morning a call to Americans to “renegotiate their wants from our needs” in an appeal for common ground “above the devastating reality that has tragically became our children’s problem.”
McConaughey advised people to reject such tragedies as part of the status quo. McConaughey suggested a more reflective approach to gun control reform and policy changes.
The true call to action is to every American to look deeper into the mirror and ask themselves: “What do we really value?” What can we do to fix the problem? What are the smallest sacrifices we can make today to ensure a safer country, state, and community tomorrow?
