At the end of the working week, the police in Baden-Württemberg want to check the speed in traffic even more. According to the Ministry of the Interior, most of the controls of the week are to take place on Friday with a “speed marathon”. The so-called speed camera marathon has been running since Monday. The aim of the campaign is to increase awareness of the dangers. Because the most common reason for fatal accidents is excessive speed.

According to the ministry, checks are carried out especially at schools, daycare centers, old people’s homes and accident black spots. In contrast to other federal states, Baden-Württemberg does not publish exactly where the mobile measuring points are located. “We want road users to adhere to the applicable speed limits across the board and not just at certain points,” said a spokesman.

In Stuttgart, too, the locations for the controls are selected spontaneously, as a police spokesman said. However, the main focus in the state capital should be on the federal roads. With mobile laser devices from the motorcycle squadron and light barriers from the traffic police, the officers are called upon to measure speed more intensively.

The police union (GdP) considers the so-called speed camera marathon to be unsuitable for reducing the number of speeding accidents. “A time-limited speed measurement does not necessarily lead to lasting changes in driving behavior,” said GdP Vice-Chairman Michael Mertens.

The “Blitzermarathon” is part of a Europe-wide control week. Last year, 400,000 vehicles were measured in Baden-Württemberg and around 15,500 violations were punished. Up to and including Sunday (April 23) there should be more controls. Cities, municipalities and districts are also taking part in the campaign.
