Samsung presented new premium smartphones on February 1st. The Galaxy S23 series includes three fresh models: the Galaxy S23, the Galaxy S23 and the Galaxy S23 Ultra. According to the manufacturer, the series has been defining what a smartphone can offer for more than a decade. And with the new variants one wants to even exceed the expectations of the customers, it was said at the presentation.
The focus of the presentation was primarily the camera of the Ultra version, which offers, among other things, an adaptive pixel sensor with 200 megapixels. In addition, so-called “Nightography” functions should enable good photo and video recordings even in poor lighting conditions. An AI-supported algorithm should help with this. It should now also be possible to record videos in 8K quality at up to 30 frames per second. The built-in wide-angle cameras of the S23 and S23, on the other hand, only have 50 megapixels each.
Two well-known film personalities were engaged by Samsung to demonstrate the possibilities. Ridley Scott (85), the director of classics like “Blade Runner” or “Alien”, recorded a film with his smartphone that is to be released shortly. Excerpts from the set were shown during the presentation. The South Korean tech giant has also commissioned Na Hong-jin, the director of “The Chaser” and “The Wailing”, to shoot another film.
Inside is a “Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy” processor, currently the most powerful model from the manufacturer Qualcomm. The processor should enable a significant increase in performance. Samsung states that the working speed has increased by around 30 percent compared to the S22 series. A battery with 5,000 mAh (4,700 mAh for the S23, 3,900 mAh for the S23) should meanwhile provide enough power.
The Ultra model also has the largest display in comparison. While the most expensive variant has a 6.8-inch screen, the siblings have 6.6 inches (S23) and 6.1 inches (S23). The dimensions therefore differ just as slightly. The S23 Ultra is 163.4 x 78.1 x 8.9 millimeters. The other two are slightly smaller, but also thinner at 7.6 millimeters each. All three also offer an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz to display content particularly smoothly.
However, customers have to dig deep into their pockets for all of this. Depending on the version, the devices cost just under or well over 1,000 euros. While the Samsung Galaxy S23 with 128 gigabytes of memory is available for around 949 euros, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with 512 gigabytes is 1,579 euros. The smartphones can be pre-ordered now and will be available in stores from February 17th.
