News anchors are not allowed to show their emotions, they have to report on the television screen about sometimes terrible events with an impassive face. The “Tagesschau” in particular is known for this sober news style. But even the speakers in front of the camera are not robots, but people who are sometimes quite concerned with the world situation.
“Tagesschau” spokesman Constantin Schreiber has now said that he once was about to burst into tears live during the show. After the 8 p.m. edition on February 26 last year, he was “complete,” reports the 43-year-old in the “Bild” interview. A post about a boy who was rescued from a war zone in Ukraine and reunited with his mother “activated something very emotional in me,” said Schreiber. “I just thought: you can’t break down or cry here on the news.”
The journalist nevertheless maintained his professionalism and brought the program to the stage: “As an impulse, I started to just line up the letters to form words and read them out loud and completely detached myself from the content. You could have asked me afterwards what the following contributions were about , I couldn’t have said it.” A lot came together for him that day, Schreiber looks back: “We had just come out of the corona pandemic, it was winter, the war in Ukraine had broken out. I had worked through the day for a very long time.”
The current news situation is also getting on the mind of many of his viewers. The journalist has just written a book about how to stay optimistic despite bad news. At that moment, however, his protective cover began to crumble. “Neither am I a robot who is left cold by this terrible suffering in the world,” clarifies the news anchor, who regularly reports on wars, crises and catastrophes in the “Tagesschau”. Schreiber himself has found his own mechanisms to clear his head: “I prefer to play the piano for several hours a day or do sports.”
