Maggie moves to Chicago for her dream job, leaving her husband Dr. Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill) back.

McCreary has been a main cast member since Season 10 ended. She joined Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital to find out more about her birth mother, the late Dr. Ellis Gray (Kate Burton, 65) to find out. She will be the new head of cardiothoracic surgery and thus the successor to Dr. Christina Yang (Sandra Oh, 52).

Maggie descends from the longtime affair of Ellis Gray and Dr. Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr., 68). Gray gave her up for adoption after birth – unbeknownst to Richard. Over the course of the series, Maggie not only grows closer to her biological father, but also to her half-sister Meredith and her three children. also dr Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone, 41), Meredith’s sister-in-law, becomes like a sister to her. After Meredith and Maggie’s departure, Amelia remains as the only one of the series’ trio.

At the end of her farewell episode, Maggie stands in the elevator with her birth mother, Ellis, and her late adoptive mother, Diane Pierce (LaTanya Richardson, 73), and bids farewell to a new life. “Playing Maggie Pierce has been one of the true joys of my life,” McCreary said in a statement in March, shortly after announcing her departure. “I walk with deep gratitude for every step of this journey. I look forward to this next chapter and what the future holds.”

The actress is leaving the series of her own volition, but will return this season. “Maggie is coming back. Let’s put it this way, she and Winston still have something to discuss,” she explained in an interview with “Deadline”. The actress does not rule out further comebacks in the future. “She’s not dead. She still has strong ties to Seattle and the Gray Sloan family, so the door is certainly open to me.”
