A new exhibition in London offers a glimpse into the private life and musical career of British rock singer Freddie Mercury. The auction house Sotheby’s is auctioning more than 1,400 items from the estate of the Queen frontman, who died in 1991. Until September 5, they will be on public display for the first time as part of the exhibition “Freddie Mercury – A World Of His Own” in the rooms of Sotheby’s.

Many unusual and classic pieces of furniture, numerous paintings and other art objects, fine crockery and the legendary singer’s extravagant wardrobe with various stage outfits from the 70s and 80s will be presented at the auction. In addition to several fine kimonos, there are many other valuable souvenirs from Japan. Mercury was considered a lover of Japanese culture and traveled to the country several times.

Mercury was “an educated, art-loving person,” said Sotheby’s board member Franka Heiderer of the German Press Agency in London. “He had great taste, a love of art, attention to detail, a tremendous love for Japan.” Celebrating was also important to him, as evidenced by a party room in his house, where Mercury liked to entertain his guests. “He was very cultured, but also a rock star,” says Heiderer.

The highlight of the extensive collection is a baby grand that Mercury bought in 1975. He is said to have composed numerous classic songs for his band Queen on the Yamaha G2 Baby Grand Piano, including “Bohemian Rhapsody”. The estimated value is up to three million pounds (about 3.5 million euros). Handwritten lyrics, drafts and notes are also part of the auction.

Freddie Mercury had bequeathed his London home and estate, known as the “Garden Lodge,” to his former partner and close friend, Mary Austin. Some of the items are already being auctioned off in online auctions. Sotheby’s will be holding live auctions from 6th to 8th September. Admission to the exhibition “Freddie Mercury – A World Of His Own” is free.
