René Weller (1953-2023) is dead. The ex-professional boxer died on Tuesday (August 22) at the age of 69. This was confirmed by his wife Maria of the “Bild” newspaper. “I let him go and it’s been very difficult in the last few weeks,” she explained. In an Instagram post, she also wrote, “I salute your recent journey. Hand in hand and in my arms you left my home at 5:50pm today in peace.”

It tears her heart, “no longer hearing your voice, your laughter and feeling your hands. I thank you for the wonderful life and our uniquely great love. Nobody can replace you, because nobody can be like you anymore! ” Her husband “fought like a lion, but unfortunately lost your last fight”.

As a professional, Weller was, among other things, German Champion and two-time European Champion of the European Boxing Union (EBU). Because of his extravagant appearances and looks outside of the boxing ring, the five-time “Boxer of the Year” was nicknamed “the beautiful René”. The Pforzheimer ended his career 30 years ago. After that, he appeared frequently in television programs. In 2005, for example, he was part of “Big Brother”, in the summer of 2016 he and his wife took part in the RTL format “Das Sommerhaus der Stars”. In the summer of 2021, Maria Weller, who took care of her husband to the end, spoke to “Bild” about her husband’s dementia, which he had been suffering from since 2014.

Under Maria Weller’s Instagram post, the first celebrities expressed their sympathy. “My sincere condolences,” commented former German boxer Regina Halmich (46). “Dear Maria, my sincere condolences – I have always met you sincerely, funny and charmingly,” wrote Julian FM Stoeckel (36). Bert Wollersheim (72) added: “I’m so sad, Maria. So long, old friend.”
