Anyone who entered the terms “Taylor Swift” and “jets” into the world’s largest Internet search engine, Google, was likely to receive results relating to the singer and her ownership of two private planes.
If one assumes that such results could have a damaging effect on one’s reputation – because private planes represent ostentation or pollution – one might get the idea that Swift would like to change these search results. This is exactly what is now being suggested by some of the artist’s social media postings that have gone viral in the USA and have been picked up in many ways by the US press.
The core of a conspiracy ideology – or better: conspiracy narrative, because they often have nothing in common with ideology – is the assumed conspiratorial, targeted collaboration of some people for a mostly illegitimate purpose. This story is used to explain situations or developments that in reality usually only arose by chance or for completely different reasons.
The viral posts about Taylor Swift imply exactly that. She was recently seen as a spectator at the football games of the Kansas City Chiefs, Travis Kelce’s team, with whom she then had a private relationship – neither herself nor Kelce denied it Intimation was said to have occurred.
After the game on September 24th, there was an announcement that Taylor Swift would also attend the following game – namely the one against the New York Jets. Jets? There was something! Exactly. The term that is also used for airplanes. So if you want to find out whether there are new photos of the singer from football game visits, search for “Taylor Swift Jets” on Google – and you will find them. Because the suggestions that Google makes to searchers are also based on past queries, from which the search engine tries to infer the current search request
Thanks to the large number of search queries, “Taylor Swift” in combination with “Jets” is no longer portrayed as a potential environmental polluter, but rather as a sports enthusiast in love, and the goal of cleaning up the image would be achieved.
Does it all sound pretty absurd, complicated and unbelievable? That’s probably it too. The most obvious inconsistency is that Swift could have simply chosen a Jets player. But so be it. Perhaps this choice would have been too obvious and we would have asked ourselves the – quite exciting – question “What if…?” never be able to pose.
