After much trepidation, the winner of the first season of “Drag Race Germany” has been chosen – her name is Pandora Nox. The Austrian was able to prevail against her colleagues Metamorkid and Yvonne Nightstand in the final of the German-language offshoot of the reality show “RuPaul’s Drag Race” on Paramount. She not only won a crown and a scepter, but also 100,000 euros in prize money.
“I’m speechless,” Nox said as she was awarded the crown by host Barbie Breakout at the end of episode 12. “That’s all?” she joked – and thus ended the first season of the format, which has been broadcast weekly since September on the streaming provider Paramount. The series had already been filmed in Colombia in the summer.
One of the few cis-gender participants
Pandora Nox was able to convince the jury in the last episode with the overall package of her travesty art. It may also have helped that the dancer visibly felt comfortable in the last dance challenge. Pandora Nox is one of the few cis-gender women to have taken part in one of the internationally successful formats – and the first to win one. Cis means that the person identifies with the gender assigned to them at birth. It is the counterpart to trans identity.
Finalist Metamorkid, also from Austria, impressed the jury with her humor and the spectacular outfits she presented on the catwalk at the end of each episode. So she ended up in the last three. In the finale, she shared intimate moments with the audience when she opened up to the presenter and talked about exclusion and self-harm.
The third member of the group was Berliner Yvonne Nightstand, who caught up well, especially in the last few episodes. She scored points with her humor and also won in an episode in which the participants were supposed to make fun of each other in a particularly smart way. She sewed many of her outfits for the catwalk herself and was praised by the jury for her development in the competition.
“Tatort” parodies and Merkel looks
During the course of the competition, a musical called “Drag-Ort” was also performed, a transvestite parody of the successful German format “Tatort”. A special catwalk challenge was the “Night of a Thousand Merkels”, in which the participants had to present their favorite look of the ex-chancellor.
All twelve episodes of the first season of “Drag Race Germany” will be broadcast on the streaming provider Paramount in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
