Fantasy and sci-fi fans traditionally get their money’s worth at the New York Comic Con, which takes place from October 6th to 9th this year. The “Star Trek” franchise in particular was or is impressively represented there in 2022. The show stole the new trailer for the third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard”. Because, as announced in advance, the title hero aka Sir Patrick Stewart (82) gathers almost his entire crew from “The Next Century” in it to save our and countless other galaxies one last time.

Some of Jean-Luc’s former companions have appeared in previous seasons. The line-up for season three reads like it was from the best “TNG” times: Jonathan Frakes (70, William T. Riker), Brent Spiner (73, Data), LeVar Burton (65, Geordi La Forge), Gates McFadden (73, Beverly Crusher), Marina Sirtis (67, Deanna Troi) and Michael Dorn (69, Worf) all appear in the trailer. The latter in particular seems to have undergone a radical character change over the years…

Did Worf, of all people, renounce violence from the warlike Klingon people? “You should know that I now prefer pacifism to fighting,” he tells his former Enterprise crew members in the clip. Riker’s pragmatic answer: “We will all die.”

“I received a call for help from Beverly Crusher,” Picard says in the trailer. A new, mysterious threat seems to be targeting the Starfleet legend and all his allies. Said danger goes by the name of Vardic and is played by Amanda Plummer (65). The “Pulp Fiction” star (yes, it’s Honey-Bunny!) gets to show off his diabolical side in the trailer, and takes thieving pleasure in firing at Picard and his crew. Revenge is apparently the motive – what for remains a mystery.

But the trailer also introduces two other villains who, unlike Vardic, should be very familiar to “Star Trek” fans: Brent Spiner is once again allowed to embody Data’s evil android twin Lore. Even die-hard Trekkies might not have counted on villain number three: The hologram version of Sherlock Holmes’ nemesis Moriarty, who has already brought the Enterprise under her control several times in the past, also reappears.

“Having Moriarty come back is both entertaining and scary,” Stewart said during the panel discussion at New York Comic Con. At his side on stage were his six “Starship Enterprise – The Next Century” companions.

From February 16, 2023, the new “Picard” episodes will start in the USA via Paramount. In Germany, the first two seasons were released on Amazon Prime Video.
