Taylor Swift’s (32) music video for “Midnights” lead single “Anti-Hero” was edited to remove a scene where she steps on a bathroom scale that says “fat.” The display on the scale can no longer be seen. Instead, Swift’s anti-hero clone just gives her a disappointed look.
As “Variety” further reports, one can only speculate about the reasons for the processing. Shortly after the video was released on October 21, however, an online debate about the scene flared up. Critics dubbed the images “anti-fat” because they suggest obesity is a negative thing.
In an Instagram post accompanying the release of the music video, which Swift wrote and directed, she says the visual rendering reflects her own “nightmare scenarios and intrusive thoughts playing out in real time.”
Taylor Swift has spoken about her own battle with an eating disorder in the past, most fully in her 2020 Netflix documentary Miss Americana.
In the film, Swift admits that there were times “I’d see a picture of myself feeling like my belly was too big, or… someone said I looked pregnant.. .and that just made me feel a little hungry – just stop eating”.
Meanwhile, she continues to break records with her new album: After the singer set a streaming record on the first day of the release of “Midnights” on Spotify, the classic sales are also looking excellent.
As “Billboard” reported on Wednesday, the pop star sold more than a million copies of his album in the first three days. With this, “Midnights” has made the currently most successful album start of the year.
