Will the 80th Golden Globe Gala be Hollywood’s Party of the Year? At least that’s what Helen Hoehne announced on Monday morning in Beverly Hills when the Globe nominations were announced. The German is chairwoman of the Association of Foreign Press (HFPA), which will be handing out the gold-colored globes for the 80th time in January. Massive criticism for the lack of diversity led to the cancellation of the TV gala last January. Now the show is scheduled to go live again on January 10th – and the contenders have now been determined.

The German anti-war film “Nothing New in the West” has a chance of winning a trophy. The literary adaptation by director Edward Berger was nominated in the “Non-English language film” category. There are four other candidates, including “Close” from Belgium and “Argentina, 1985”.

Set in rural Ireland, dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin, about a broken male friendship, is a favorite in the Golden Globes race with eight nominations. Four actors, including Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson, and director Martin McDonagh are among the contenders.

Also, sci-fi comedy Everything Everywhere All at Once, Hollywood satire Babylon, and Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical drama The Fabelmans have multiple chances to win.

In addition to The Fabelmans, Elvis and Tar, box office hit Top Gun: Maverick and James Cameron’s hit-potential epic Avatar: The Way of Water compete in the top Best Drama category. Such audience favorites could get more viewers in front of the screen for the Globe Awards.

Daniel Craig has a chance at a Globe

The names of big stars should also help. Actors nominated for a Globe include ex-Bond Daniel Craig (“Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery”), “Elvis” actor Austin Butler, Oscar winner Cate Blanchett (“Tàr”) and Ana De Armas as Marilyn Monroe in Blonde. Brad Pitt, who plays an acclaimed 1920s movie star in “Babylon,” is nominated for the supporting role.

British actress Carey Mulligan also has a chance of winning a supporting role Globe for her performance in Maria Schrader’s investigative drama “She Said”. In it, the German director tells the difficult research of two reporters from the “New York Times” into Harvey Weinstein’s sexual assault. There were no other nominations for Schrader’s film.

The competition for the best film song could bring famous pop stars onto the Globe stage. Nominees include Taylor Swift for “Carolina” from “The Crayfish Song”, Lady Gaga for “Hold My Hand” from “Top Gun: Maverick” and Rihanna for “Lift Me Up” from “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”.

“The Crown” is nominated in the TV category

In addition to 14 film categories, the Globes – in contrast to the Oscars – also honor television productions. Comedy Abbott Elementary, along with royalty series The Crown and drama-comedy The White Lotus, are favorite TV series this time. The four-time nominated Netflix series “The Crown” tells the life story of the recently deceased British Queen Elizabeth II – actress Imelda Staunton can hope for a trophy for her role as Queen.

The 79th awarding of the Golden Globes in January 2022 was an unspectacular affair, without a red carpet, without a prominent audience, and there were no nominees at all. The names of the winners were only announced via the HFPA association’s social media accounts.

For years, the association had just under a hundred members, the number of jurors has now doubled and has become significantly more diverse, the HFPA said. More than half of those entitled to vote are women, so the body represents 62 countries.

The upcoming 80th anniversary show will again be staged at the elegant Hotel Beverly Hilton. The US comedian and actor Jerrod Carmichael was announced as the presenter, but initially nothing was known about the participating star presenters. It remains exciting to see which Globe contenders will personally receive their trophies.
