Markus Lanz doesn’t have to worry about money. The TV presenter earns quite well not only with his talk show, but also through books and other moderations. But the 54-year-old also knows times that were less financially rosy, he said in the new edition of the podcast “Lanz

The conversation with the philosopher Richard David Precht was about exactly this topic: money. Right at the beginning, Lanz countered the proverb that the same does not make you happy: “But not unhappy either.” Precht and Lanz – today “probable millionaires”, as the philosopher himself says – were apparently both quite broke for a time in their lives.

For a few years he hadn’t had the feeling “that the card would definitely come out of the ATM again,” said Precht. And Markus Lanz chatted a little more out of the box: “I also know the noise when the card no longer comes out.” A “short, dry noise,” as the moderator describes it.

In his younger years, Lanz often experienced financial dry spells. In the podcast, he speaks openly about the feelings that triggered in him – for example, if the card just got stuck in the machine. The “feeling afterwards” was the worst: “With what facial expression do you turn to those waiting behind you and somehow try to explain that this is just a misunderstanding.”

“I always found it incredibly humiliating not to have any money,” recalls the ZDF journalist. “That stigmatizes.” During this time he was constantly busy “developing tactics to cover up that you just don’t have any money”. Precht even goes so far as to say that lack of money “definitely makes you unhappy” and reports bad dreams and sleep problems. The problem is particularly serious in children, says Lanz. Because while adults could still do something to improve their situation, children wouldn’t: “The helplessness that comes from this is all-encompassing.”
