In order to make a good impression with a cover letter, applications or even a business plan, thanks to artificial intelligence you no longer have to be a great writer. These four steps should be followed for a good result.
Before writing a text, one should become aware of the task, purpose and audience of the text and communicate the ChatGPT. Is it a formal e-mail to an authority or a creative text for an application? It is best to define who your readership is and what needs and expectations you have of the text.
Example of a cover letter:
“Create a cover letter for my application as a marketing manager at startup XY. My contact person is Mr. Schmidt, the managing director and founder of the startup. He is responsible for marketing. My goal is to present myself as an employee who works independently and who likes to learn and adapt quickly familiarizes yourself with new topics. Before that, I worked at Mustermann GmbH and helped set up the marketing department there.”
For longer and creative texts, the best approach is to plan the content yourself and divide it into sections. To do this, ChatGPT needs the clearest possible instructions on the points it should write about. The order for the individual sections is therefore best written in short sentences or bullet points.
General guidelines like these should be avoided:
Instructions that are as specific as possible are better:
“I want to cheer up my wife. Write a funny poem about how we were arguing this afternoon about whether it’s called Brezn or Brezel in Bavaria. I was sure you can also say Brezel, but she corrected me. Say it directly in the poem The text is supposed to taunt my dogmatism and underline our loving relationship despite the argument.”
The best thing to do is slip into the role of an editor and see the AI as your assistant. ChatGPT provides the inspiration before you fine-tune the output yourself. It is important to check style, arguments, word images and examples and to bring in your own personality. After that, you should let your text rest for a moment.
You then refine the wording so that everything is precise and understandable. Style tools such as the “Wordliga Text Analysis” or the “Blablameter” also help to improve the style and readability of the text.
No software finds all errors. That’s why it’s worth having someone else proofread longer texts – for example friends or colleagues.
The result is, for example, a poem like the one already mentioned on the question “Pretzel or pretzel”:
Dearest wife, it was noon today
Our quarrel was really hearty,
Pretzel or pretzel, what a quarrel,
But one thing was certain: I would not give in.
You say to me, “My darling, my hero,
In Bavaria it’s pretzels, nothing else counts!”
But I, who is always right, remained stubborn
“No, my dear, it’s pretzel, only!”
We argued and discussed
But we knew that the heart rules here.
Our love stays strong
Despite the pretzel war, so wonderful.
