The viewers of the ARD “Morgenmagazin” saw an unusual picture on Monday morning. In the 8 a.m. edition of the Tagesschau, spokeswoman Judith Rakers could be seen after the first film with a large cable microphone in her right hand – the scene was reminiscent of a bygone television era with Dieter Thomas Heck or Hans Rosenthal.

The 47-year-old immediately gave the reason for the curious picture: “As I can hear right now, we have no sound, so I’m going to continue old school with this microphone.”

Just a few seconds after the greeting, Rakers could no longer be heard. Instead, images of the Russian air raids on major Ukrainian cities last night ran without comment on the station. With the hand microphone, the speaker confidently brought the following minutes of the news program to the stage, not without apologizing for the sound problems with a smile at the end (you can see the glitch again here in the ARD media library).

After the handover from the Hamburg “Tagesschau” to the Cologne “Morgenmagazin” studio, moderator Susan Link, her colleagues Till Nassif and Peter Großmann showed solidarity – and each sat on the sofa with a hand microphone.

The following newscast at 8:30 a.m. went without a hitch, with Judith Rakers’ lapel microphone once again capturing the sound perfectly. “I’m very happy that the microphone is working again now,” she said at the end of the issue.

Even if the vast majority of the programs run without problems, the “ARD” Tagesschau is always good for a breakdown. Three examples:
