Are the Windsors racist and do they have unconscious bias? The royal world asked itself this question when, in their famous interview with Oprah Winfrey, Duchess Meghan and Prince Harry told of a conversation with a member of the royal family. This happened when the Duchess of Sussex was pregnant with her first child, Prince Archie. The person thought aloud about what skin color the unborn child would have. Winfrey reacted with shock in the interview, which was broadcast worldwide in April 2021.

In the wake of this, endless newspaper articles and online commentaries debated whether the British royal family is racist. Prince William was even asked this question in his first public appearance after his brother and sister-in-law’s TV interview. He tight-lipped, saying only that the family is most definitely not racist. During his promotional tour for his book “Spare” (in Germany “Reserve”), Harry emphasized that he and Meghan had never claimed that his relatives were racists.

Nevertheless, the topic has now come up again, because an unnamed source is said to have reported to the British newspaper “Daily Telegraph” about letters between the 41-year-old and her father-in-law. In it, Meghan allegedly addressed unconscious prejudices within the family. Previously, the current king is said to have expressed his sadness at the rift between the Sussexes and the rest of the family. The identity of the person who asked the question about Archie’s skin color was also revealed in that correspondence. Both Charles and Meghan have therefore confirmed that this question was not “malicious”. Nevertheless, she was not satisfied with her father-in-law’s answer and this is one of the reasons why she will not be traveling to Charles’ coronation.

Prince Harry will travel alone from Montecito to London and will be present at the ceremony on May 6th. It is the 38-year-old’s first public meeting with his family since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral last September. In the British media, insiders repeatedly speak of frustration and anger at the revelations of the ducal couple in their Netflix documentary and autobiography. Most recently, Omid Scobie, Sussex biographer and journalist, speculated that Meghan would not come to the coronation because son Archie turned four on the same day. Only the family knows the real reason.
