The second preliminary round game of the German national team at the soccer World Cup in Qatar attracted significantly more spectators in front of the TV screens than the opening match against Japan. According to official AGF data, around 17.05 million viewers gathered in front of the TV sets from 8 p.m. onwards for the 1-1 draw against co-favourites Spain. This corresponds to a strong market share of 49.3 percent for the broadcasting ZDF among the total viewers.
The “crime scene” repetition “Explain Chimera” from Münster from 2015 reached a decent 5.08 million people in the first at 8:15 p.m.
The game between Germany and Spain was the first of the 25 World Cup games to date to attract more than ten million viewers. As the industry portal “DWDL” reports, six of the first 25 matches at the 2018 World Cup in Russia were successful.
Germany vs. Spain now ranks as the second most-watched program of the year behind the final of the Women’s World Cup with around 17.9 million viewers. For comparison: 9.23 million people tuned in to the first game against Japan on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
