“Halloween Ends” will start in German cinemas from October 13th and consequently with a little run-up to the eponymous horror festival. The strip represents the conclusion of the new “Halloween” trilogy, which director David Gordon Green (47) presents together with Blumhouse Productions, film studio Universal Pictures and last but not least the original scream queen from 1978, Jamie Lee Curtis (63). launched four years ago. The title of the finale already suggests it – after more than 50 years of terror by Michael Myers, the terror should finally come to an end. But can you really believe that after the turbulent history of the film series?
The fact is: The “Halloween” film series has risen from the dead almost as often as its murdering masked man. Even if the new trilogy deliberately ignores most of the sequels to John Carpenter’s (74) original from 1978 and is intended to serve as its direct narration – “Halloween Ends” is already the 13th part of the franchise on paper.
During the press conference for “Halloween Ends,” both director Green and leading actress Curtis emphasized that this will be the last duel between ex-babysitter Laurie Strode and her nemesis. “I must now release her and let her live on in the spirit and hearts of the fans who supported her,” the actress was quoted as saying by Entertainment Weekly.
But Curtis had actually turned his back on the character after “Halloween 3” from 1982. In “Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers” six years later, a side note explained that Laurie had died. Films number five (1989) and six (1998) also did without them. But like Michael Myers, Laurie is amazingly hard to kill…
“Halloween H20” in 1998 did exactly what the new trilogy did from 2018: ignore the numerous sequels and reinstall Jamie Lee Curtis as the leading lady. She died as Laurie four years later in “Halloween: Resurrection” for the second time and very early in the film – at the express wish of the actress, as “Variety” quotes the star.
Anyone who has counted will notice: There are still two missing for 13 “Halloween” films. That brought Rob Zombie (57) on the way in 2007 and 2009. As a remake of the Carpenter original, however, they downright insulted the majesty in the eyes of the fans. Actress Scout Taylor-Compton (33) as the new Laurie was also accepted by very few.
Which brings us to the present. Given the history of the film series, it would be naïve to believe that it will be “myered” forever from 2022 onwards. Especially after Curtis’ recent statements, it is probably not assumed without reason that Laurie could die in “Halloween Ends” in the fight against Michael Myers. But even that doesn’t mean much – it would be the third time.
