The 81st edition of the Golden Globes has now found a new TV home. The event, which will take place on January 7, 2024, is moving from NBC to CBS, as the industry website “Deadline” reports. The awards ceremony can also be streamed live via Paramount. This deal brings to an end a months-long search for a new television home for the Golden Globes.

“We are so proud to bring the Golden Globes to CBS to celebrate the awards show’s 81 years of history,” a spokesperson said. After various scandals and a radical restructuring of the awards ceremony, it remained in limbo until recently whether the upcoming Golden Globes would even be broadcast.

In the middle of the year, news broke that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), which had previously been responsible for the Globes, was dissolving. A private investor group, the investment firm Eldridge Industries and the production company Dick Clark Productions, had purchased the Golden Globe Awards presented by the HFPA. In the future, the prize will no longer be awarded by a non-profit organization, but rather at a commercial event. However, the new owners are said to have assured that they want to continue the HFPA’s charitable activities. A foundation called the Golden Globe Foundation was founded for this purpose.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association was formed in 1943 as an association of foreign journalists at the center of the US film world. In 1944, the organization held the Golden Globes for the first time. Over the years, these have become a reliable indicator for the subsequent Oscar awards.

But numerous scandals have recently surrounded the HFPA with increasing frequency. In 2021, there was an outcry over the lack of diversity within the association. Not a single black journalist should be a member of the HFPA. Many media and production companies subsequently boycotted the Golden Globes. The 2022 ceremony was not televised. In January of this year, the 80th awards gala took place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, and the US broadcaster NBC broadcast live one last time.
