When it was announced that “Lady Bird” director Greta Gerwig would be responsible for the new “Barbie” film, it quickly became clear: This film will bring a feminist perspective. But that’s exactly what conservative voices in the US don’t seem to like.
The ultra-conservative author Ben Shapiro shared his very own criticism on Twitter. In one clip he burned several Barbie dolls. He described the strip that was too “woke” for him as a “flaming heap of rubbish”.
Meanwhile, Texas Senator Ted Cruz called Greta Gerwig’s film “Chinese propaganda.” He was referring to the ban on the “Barbie” film in Vietnam. According to the authorities in Hanoi, the strip shows the so-called nine-dash line, with which China has been claiming large parts of the South China Sea on maps for decades. However, other countries also claim areas there – such as Vietnam, the Philippines or Malaysia.
“The map in Barbieland is a child’s crayon drawing,” a Warner Bros. spokesman told Variety magazine.
The also ultra-conservative journalist Tomi Lahren also took a position on “Barbie”. It would go too far for her to label the film as “anti-male”, after all it’s only about dolls. The film is not that profound, she said. And yet she criticized “modern feminism” because, in her opinion, it softened men.
