In view of the devastation caused by Hurricane “Otis” on the Mexican Pacific coast, the Spanish star tenor Plácido Domingo was very saddened by the destruction of the seaside resort of Acapulco.

“I am shocked and very sad about the loss of human life and the unspeakable devastation in my beloved Acapulco,” the 82-year-old wrote on Saturday on the news platform X, formerly Twitter. “Since my honeymoon with Marta in 1962 and for the past 40 years, Acapulco Bay has been a home for my family, a place of joy and countless vacations, Christmas parties and New Year celebrations, a haven of peace and serenity.”

“Otis” hit the coast as a hurricane of the highest level 5 on Wednesday night with sustained wind speeds of almost 270 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 330 kilometers per hour. The hurricane tore down facades, toppled trees and caused severe flooding. Almost the entire tourist infrastructure of the popular holiday resort was severely damaged.

“I am glad to know that my dear friends and long-time employees are safe, but it pains me to think of all those who did not survive this tragedy,” Domingo wrote. “Our house was badly damaged, but it pains my heart to think of those who lost their homes.”
