In Germany alone, almost 30 million Christmas trees were sold at Christmas time last year – this is according to current statistics (as of August 2019). In most households it is set up shortly before or on Christmas Eve. It will be dismantled no later than the Day of the Three Kings, i.e. January 6th. In order for it to remain standing for as long as possible without drying out, it needs to be watered regularly. This is made possible by a Christmas tree stand that can be used as a water dispenser and holds the tree trunk in place. At least that’s the theory, but how do the models perform in practice? The consumer portal “askgeorge.com” tested five different stands on a 2.70 meter high Nordmann fir. The results of the investigation were made available exclusively to stern.

With a test grade of 1.0 (very good), the Premium L Christmas tree stand from Krinner made it to first place. The model was examined (like the others) based on four different criteria that were defined in advance: stability, handling, safety and functionality. To ensure that the results were not distorted, each Christmas tree stand was tested several times in a row. However, the most important question of all was in the foreground: Does the fir tree have a firm and secure hold? The answer for this model is clearly yes. The five kilogram Christmas tree stand Premium L from Krinner not only makes a very high-quality impression, but is quick and easy to use. In addition to the automatically closing safety device, the model was particularly impressive due to its high stability, which is thanks to its all-round single-rope technology. But the integrated water level indicator and its safety bell were also rated positively.

The Comfort M Christmas tree stand from the same brand was tested. With a test grade of 1.4 (good), the model secured second place. Similar to its predecessor, the stand was also able to impress with the all-round single-rope technology used, which enables high stability. There is also an integrated water level indicator in the stand, which shows the maximum capacity. The appearance and workmanship also made a very good impression here; handling is simple and intuitive. But what’s more important: the fir tree is secure. Thanks to the integrated safety tip, which is anchored in the ground and provides additional support for the tree, you don’t have to worry that the fir tree could fall over and bury the tree decorations underneath.

The Star-Max brand secured bronze with its Christmas tree stand model 2018. Here too, the all-round single rope technology ensures high stability, and the stand is easy and intuitive to use. Nevertheless, the device “only” received a test grade of 1.6 (good) – due to the foot pedal, which the testers only had to press once after releasing the safety device. Since the bracket has shot up immediately after this step, there is a risk that a child could accidentally release the bracket and cause the tree to fall over. The integrated water level indicator in the form of a float was also positively highlighted here.

A model from Kinner was also able to secure fourth place: the Vario Classic Christmas tree stand was given a test grade of 1.7 (good) because it has the same positive properties as its predecessor models Premium L and Comfort M. In other words, the handling and workmanship are good, and the fir tree stands firmly in the stand – thanks to the all-round single rope technology. What was negative, however, was that the Christmas tree stand does not have a water level indicator, although it is significantly more expensive than the other devices. In addition, there is also a safety risk here: As soon as the foot pedal is unlocked, the holder comes off immediately when you press it. This means that the tree can accidentally fall over if a child accidentally loosens the holder.

It is not without reason that the G472 Christmas tree stand from Bosmere ends up in fifth and last place in the test series. The cheapest model gets a test grade of 1.8 (good) because, despite its screw technology, it guarantees a high level of stability – but it cannot be installed alone. In order to secure the fir tree into the stand, one person must hold the tree while a second person tightens each screw. The device can then be filled with water to supply the fir tree and to increase its stability. From a purely visual perspective, the model doesn’t appear to be as high-quality as the others, but in practice it still works just as well as its predecessors.

If you are one of those people who put up the Christmas tree very early during the Christmas season and leave it up until the last day, you are probably familiar with the problem: trickling pine needles and dripping wax (as long as you light real candles). This is not only very annoying, but also damages the floor. A special Christmas tree blanket can help here, protecting wooden and carpeted floors equally. It is simply pushed under the Christmas tree, covers the Christmas tree stand and is also washable – so you can easily remove any stains after the Christmas season. Here, too, there are different models with or without a motif and different colors and materials. However, if you are afraid of moisture because the stand for the fir tree might leak, we recommend that you use a special plastic base on which to place the tree. It is also available with Christmas motifs, such as this one.
