In his first interview after his release from prison, Boris Becker not only spoke about his trial and his time in prison, but also gave a little insight into how his family experienced this difficult time. His mainstay was his current partner Lilian De Carvalho Monteiro, whom he described as “the love of my life”. The 33-year-old visited him regularly in prison and kept other family members up to date on his condition. His older sons Noah and Elias were also taken to the detention center.
His younger son Amadeus, who comes from his marriage to Lilly Becker, also wanted to see him, but Becker refused. “I didn’t want a 12-year-old boy to visit his father in prison. I spoke to him a few times, unfortunately not enough. You also need the mother for that and we have a difficult relationship,” he said.
Boris Becker consistently called his second wife Sharlely in the interview. “She asked me to stop calling her Lilly,” he explained. The couple separated in 2018 after nine years of marriage, but are not yet officially divorced. The 46-year-old spoke to various media during Becker’s imprisonment and described how difficult it was for their son Amadeus.
When asked about these interview statements, Boris Becker said: “I’m not the type to speak negatively about an ex-wife. A gentleman doesn’t do that. She spoke up a few times. Everyone has to know whether that was right or not not. She is responsible for her actions and she has to live with them. I try to behave as correctly as possible and I won’t say a bad word about her now.”
He maintains a relaxed relationship with his first wife Barbara, with whom he has sons Noah and Elias, even “if we’re not quite as closely connected as one might think in Germany,” said Becker.
The relationship with his illegitimate daughter Anna even intensified during his imprisonment, the ex-tennis star reported. “I’ve never spoken to my daughter as often and regularly as I did in prison. It took a prison for us to become as close as we had never been in freedom.” He and the 22-year-old spoke regularly on the phone. However, he also rejected Anna’s request for a visit because he did not want to put her through the circumstances in the detention center.
The family had grown together even more through his stay in prison, said Becker. “We became stronger from it. Our love for each other, our understanding of family has become closer. That was a lesson for us that we now have to spend a lot more time together because we just love each other too much.”
