It is a small sensation that Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan announced through their spokesman: their daughter, Lilibet Diana, now bears the title Princess. And her son is now Prince Archie Harrison. The titles have now also been updated and noted in the line of succession on the Buckingham Palace website. Until recently, Lilibet and Archie were listed there as Miss and Master.
The news caused a surprise at first. It was clear that Archie and Lilibet were theoretically entitled to the titles after the death of the Queen.
“The title follows the precedent set by the patent issued by George V in 1917, which conferred the title of prince or princess on male grandchildren of the monarch. They have been entitled to use that title since the king’s accession. The Sussexes have decided to do so,” journalist Rebecca English said on Twitter.
So far, however, it was unclear whether King Charles III. would agree to. After the Sussexes left royal life, this decision was also put to the test. There was even talk of a fight. Buckingham Palace’s website has been updated following the Queen’s death. Charles became king, Camilla queen consort. William and Kate became the Prince and Princess of Wales. But Lilibet and Archie remained Miss and Master.
In her interview with Oprah Winfrey, Duchess Meghan revealed that before the birth, Archie was told not to receive a title. “They said they didn’t want him to be a prince or princess, which was against protocol and that he wouldn’t get security,” the American said. It didn’t matter to her as long as he was allowed security measures. “Even though I have a lot of clarity about what’s good and bad about the titles… that’s their birthright that they then have to make a decision about,” she said.
There is still some ambiguity with regard to the HRH title, i.e. Her or His Royal Highness. After retiring from royal life, Prince Harry and Meghan had to relinquish their HRH titles, which meant they could no longer get taxpayer-funded security – a major bone of contention. As royal expert Katie Nicholl explained to the “Palace Confidential” podcast last year, Lilibet and Archie would therefore also not be entitled to HRH titles.
According to media reports, the titles will only be used on formal occasions in the future, such as Lilibet’s baptismal announcement.
