Colorful Christmas sweaters and short skirts are piled high in a clothing store on Hamburg’s Jungfernstieg. A teenage girl leans over a mountain of brown corduroy styles, barely wider than a belt. She is looking for her size. There are stacks of sizes 34 and 36, and at the bottom she finds a skirt in size 38. But it ends just below her bottom. “Do you have that in size 40 too?” she asks a saleswoman walking past. She looks at the girl irritated, almost as if she was asking for a sack of potatoes. “We don’t have that size.”
