Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (82) made her first public appearance two months after her extensive back operation. The Danish royal family shared a video on Instagram showing the Queen and her walking stick appearing at the gates of Fredensborg Palace on Wednesday evening. In addition to the cane, a chair was available on the stairs as an aid: the recording shows the 82-year-old holding onto it briefly as she steps out the door.
With a happy face, Queen Margrethe waves to the assembled crowd in front of the palace. “In the light of hundreds of torches, Her Majesty the Queen was received by the citizens of Fredensborg Palace,” the comment on the Instagram video reads. The torchlight procession is based on a long tradition and has taken place regularly since 1988. At the event, the monarch thanked the citizens for coming and sang together with the crowd.
Queen Margrethe II underwent extensive back surgery in February. “The operation went according to plan, the condition of the queen is good and stable given the circumstances,” the royal family said in a statement after the operation.
The royal family had previously announced in early February that the 82-year-old monarch had been suffering from back problems “for some time”. Since the situation had deteriorated, she decided to have an extensive operation.
