Duchess Meghan and her half-sister Samantha Markle share little except for the same father. According to the Duchess, her half-sister is like a stranger. If you believe Samantha Markle, Meghan’s version is not correct.

After countless headlines, Samantha Markle has now filed a lawsuit against her famous relative. In court on Wednesday, she appeared virtually with her lawyers and explained why she was accusing Meghan of defamation. Meghan slandered her in order to be able to sell her “false rags to riches story” in public. According to Samantha Markle’s lawyer, “Finding Freedom”, a book about the Sussexes, was used to carry Meghan’s narrative further into the world. Namely the story that she made it to success as an only child and under adverse circumstances. Samantha Markle told the truth, which is why Meghan puts her down.

“She was caught. She lied about her education, that she got all these scholarships. Her father paid for her education and she was caught in that lie. Why else is she belittling her sister? Why else is she belittling her father down? Why else does she deny her family who has done nothing but good all her life? She never had a problem with them,” attorney Peter Ticktin said, according to the Daily Mail. Samantha Markle was also subjected to threats, he also announced.

Meghan’s lawyer Michael Kump also spoke at the hearing. “Not every insult felt should be carried out in court, and that is the case here. The plaintiff challenges Meghan’s own childhood impressions, but that is not a suitable subject for a court,” he said. “The statements at issue here are not legally defamatory. The right to express opinions and even to criticize is guaranteed by the First Amendment,” Kump said. He also made it clear that Meghan never said she had no siblings.

Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell, who heard both sides, said she had a hard time seeing how Meghan was responsible for the statements in Finding Freedom. The book was written by authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand. Honeywell will now determine whether there is sufficient basis for a defamation lawsuit.
