They were a couple until recently, but paramedics Sarah Kant and Carlo Melchior still work shifts together. During an emergency operation one night, they take a seriously injured woman to the hospital. When Kant wants to inquire about the patient the next day, nobody in the clinic knows about her: She was allegedly never admitted. Shortly thereafter, Carlo Melchior was also found dead in the apartment. The investigations are difficult for Elisabeth “Bessie” Eyckhoff (Verena Altenberger) and her colleague Dennis Eden (Stephan Zinner) – apparently, secret services are also involved.

Strange things happen in this “police call 110”: Patients disappear without a trace – from the hospital and also from the computer system. The existence of the woman is only witnessed by paramedic Sarah Kant (Marta Kizyma). However, she seems to suffer from psychological problems, and as a viewer you soon ask yourself whether you have been taken in by a delusional vision. The fact that what is delusion and what is reality remains in limbo for a long time makes “Paranoia” worth seeing.

Many films that deal with the work of secret services and other conspiracies suffer from the fact that the dark forces usually remain in the background and their alleged influence is not really visible. Even this “police call” does not go beyond hints. It would be desirable if those responsible were clearly named – precisely so as not to encourage conspiracy theories.

It cannot be overlooked: Bessie Eyckhoff is tired of working. “Sometimes I could imagine something completely different, so professionally,” says the inspector to Dennis Eden when she is wounded in action. “Maybe you can do something where nobody sticks a knife in your thigh or cuts your pants.” Her colleague tries to change her mind: “We experience really nice things at work, we must never forget that.” But one can already see from Eyckhoff’s face: the drop has been sucked.

A dignified departure: You should not miss Verena Altenberger’s last assignment as a “police call” investigator.
