They were probably the most glamorous couple in political Berlin: Former Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas and actress Natalie Wörner announced their separation after more than seven years of relationship.

“We decided a long time ago to go our separate ways in the future,” said Maas and Wörner through their lawyer to the dpa. “We will remain friends and wish each other the best for the future,” the statement said.

Wörner and Maas first appeared publicly as a couple in spring 2016. At that time, the Saarland-born SPD politician Maas was Federal Minister of Justice, shortly before his separation from his wife Corinna had become public. Born in Stuttgart, Wörner had been known as an actress and model for many years and had just started with the ARD series “Die Diplomatin”.

The news of the glamorous political love caused a stir at the time. But the two always held back with classic couple appearances. From time to time they showed up together on the red carpet. And for the SPD, Wörner was allowed to vote for the Federal President in 2017. At the side of her partner and limping with an injured foot, Wörner came to the Federal Assembly.

Little known about personal matters

The top politician knew glamor even before he fell in love with the actress: at the beginning of 2016, the magazine “GQ” named him the best-dressed man in Germany.

Little was known about their life together. Both brought children from previous relationships. Maas and his ex-wife Corinna have two sons together. For a long time he was considered one of the most popular SPD politicians, and he had a steep career in Saarland – but it was never enough for the hoped-for job as prime minister.

At the end of 2013, the then SPD leader Sigmar Gabriel unexpectedly called. Maas became Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection in the black-red coalition, and from 2018 to 2021 he was Federal Foreign Minister. At the end of 2022 he put an end to politics altogether and thus disappeared from the scene publicly.

Wörner, on the other hand, can still be seen regularly on television and on red carpets – most recently she appeared there without Maas. The mother of a son continues to play the “diplomat” on ARD and the main role in the ZDF crime series “Under Other Circumstances”.

Recently, however, she has increasingly turned to another topic: the commitment to women’s rights. So she called the campaign

Reasons for separation unknown

But as surprising and sensational as the news of the love between Wörner and Maas came at the time – the end was so quiet and reserved. It has not been known since when the two are no longer a couple. And there was no information about the reasons for the separation either. The statement only said: “We ask you to accept that we are not making any further statements in order to protect our privacy.” The letter was signed with “Natalia Wörner Heiko Maas”.
