The late Queen Elizabeth II broke many royal records during her more than 70-year reign. She was also the last crowned head of state in Europe to serve during World War II. Because she was in April 1945 shortly before her 19th birthday at her own request – against the anxious resistance of her father King George VI. – became the first female member of the British royal family to join the women’s unit within the British armed forces, the “Auxiliary Territorial Service”. There she learned, among other things, how to maintain trucks.
