The old Queen Mary, strict grandmother of the late Elizabeth II, is said to have given her granddaughter the advice for her later life: “We have no friends outside the family, only good acquaintances!” This would prove to be a lesson that stuck with Lilibet, the future queen. In her 96 years of life, she had only a few close friends, and they were all related to her in some way.
