If Netflix has been too expensive for you or if you are already a customer and want to save something due to the crisis, the streaming service now offers a discounted subscription option. An overview of all important information about the “Basic subscription with advertising”.

Netflix is now offering four different subscriptions: the “Basic subscription with advertising” for EUR 4.99 per month, the “Basic” package for EUR 7.99 per month, the “Standard” subscription for EUR 12.99 lies and the “Premium” option for 17.99 euros. The new variant will be available today, November 3rd, from 5:00 p.m. The offer is also starting in the USA, Australia, Brazil, France, Italy, Japan, Korea and Great Britain. The advertising subscription has been available in Canada and Mexico since November 1st, and it will follow in Spain on November 10th.

“Standard” users can stream in Full HD resolution on up to two devices at the same time and “Premium” users in 4K on up to four devices such as PCs, televisions or smartphones. With the two “basic” variants, however, series and films are only displayed in 720p – and only on one device at a time. For the “basic” subscription without advertising, this is also an upgrade. Up until now, content has only been available in SD quality.

The two basic subscriptions should therefore hardly be an option, especially for larger families and cineastes. On the one hand, the user limit is annoying when several family members want to see different content. On the other hand, film and series connoisseurs may have a problem with the lower resolution, which conjures up far less impressive images on the television than those of the more expensive versions.

There are no differences in the content that users can view from the previously available subscription options. To watch hits like the four available seasons of Stranger Things or season five of The Crown, which premieres November 9, consumers simply need to access the service on any of their devices using a browser or app and click or tap .

With the “Basic subscription with advertising”, however, some content will not be included in the offer. For licensing reasons, “a limited number” of films and series will not be available to users of the new package, according to a statement. It is currently not clear which these are in Germany at the start. The streaming service is working on it.

Netflix states that the new subscription will show an average of four to five minutes of advertising per hour before and during the films and series. This may vary depending on the title selected. It is not possible for users to fast-forward or skip the advertisement.

Based on date of birth, gender and location, the advertising should also be tailored to consumers. In addition, for example, which genres a user likes to look at can also be included here.

The smartphone games included in the Netflix offer are not affected by the advertising, as the streaming service reports. These are only shown in films or series. And there are no ads in children’s profiles either.

New customers can easily book a “Basic subscription with advertising” directly. If you already have a Netflix subscription, you can switch at any time. To do this, users must log into their account and select and confirm the “Change subscription” option under the “Subscription details” menu item in the settings. If you switch to a cheaper subscription option, the change will come into effect on the next billing date.

If you do not use the streaming service directly, but for example via a package such as MagentaTV or Sky Entertainment Plus with Netflix, you must inquire with the respective provider whether a change to the “basic subscription with advertising” is possible.

For many commuters, for example, the “basic subscription with advertising” is probably unsuitable, since this is the only option in which users cannot download content to a smartphone or tablet to watch it offline. This means that only customers who stream on the way to work can use the offer on the go.

The subscription with advertising can also not be used on every device. According to Netflix, a few devices that work on the ad-free plans are not supported on the plan with ads. It is currently unclear what exactly it is.
